Dance Music

Dance music is music that can be danced to or composed for a choreographed dance. What exactly is considered dance music is dependent on social, cultural and personal factors.

The question of what can be described as dance music is answered differently depending on cultural and political differences. In many cases, modern dance music is similar to the trance-like rhythms of “primitive” cultures. Sometimes a mixing and ethnic influences between original folk music and current dance music can be observed such as bhangra, or African-born music. In this context it can be called world music.

Dance music is defined today mostly of ballroom dancing, which is in standard dances and Latin American dances with the corresponding Western styles, and also rock ‘ n’ roll, Boogie-Woogie and Disco are added. The most modern music genres today in discotheques include hip hop and electronic dance music (techno, House, etc.) are forms of rock music, although usually not as dance music in the strict sense. In addition since the early 20th century, there are always fashion and party dances which enjoy a period of being a fad, temporarily strong popularity but then usually again fall into oblivion.

Electronic dance music has a wealth of other styles, which use electronic instruments like synthesizers and samplers, and since the 1990′s also using native processing (software based music production in the form of software synthesizers and software samplers). In general, all sounds are synthetically generated up to the voices, often however non-electronic instruments are incorporated in the form of samples in the arrangement.
